There’s some truth to the saying that when you look good, you feel good. Even something as superficial as your clothing can greatly increase your self-confidence and your mood. The same goes for your skin and your hair.
We can probably all attest to that. If we like what we see in the mirror, we feel good about ourselves. If we don’t like what we see in the mirror, we don’t feel as good.
It’s not that taking care of our hair and skin can cure any emotional issues we face, but it can help support our mood and keep the stress of not being satisfied with our looks off our shoulders.
Your Skin Can Get Stressed Out, Too
Stress is one of the body’s biggest enemies. As teenagers, we were probably all told about (and experienced) the effect that stress has on our skin. Stress equals breakouts, as it were. But stress can do so much more than just bring out angry red bumps on our skin.
Stress can also cause hair thinning, gray hair, inflamed skin, or brittle nails. All those physical manifestations of stress can age people, and as stress causes people’s appearance to deteriorate, it may cause stress about their appearance as well. Which causes their skin, hair, and nails to look worse, causing even more stress, and so on and so forth. It’s a pretty vicious cycle, and it can be hard to break out of it.
Stress can also cause or worsen:
Ridged nails
Dry skin
Excessive sweating
Cold sores
Hives
Rosacea
Psoriasis
Seborrheic dermatitis
Stress and negative emotional moods can also indirectly contribute to worsened skin conditions. They people to feel too unmotivated to follow their skin regimens. Those who are too stressed or just aren’t feeling very well may skip out on exfoliating, using skin-care products, or applying sunscreen, potentially leaving their pores clogged and their skin unprotected. Their skin may look even duller as a result.
Destressing from the Inside Out
The best way to deal with stress-triggered conditions is to deal with the stress at its source. But this, of course, is often easier said than done. For skin in particular, it may be best to not only apply the appropriate stress management strategies that work for you but to also work with skin experts who can revive your skin from the outside as well.
Stress reduction techniques can lower the release of pro-inflammatory stress hormones in the body. In terms of skin, this means that you can reduce blood vessel overactivity that is caused by those stress hormones. Lowering your stress may also give you back the motivation you need to take control and follow your skin-care routine again. Once your skin starts looking better, you might start feeling better about your appearance again, and you may just start feeling better overall.
